US$65m To Extend Sangster International Airport Runway

51397The runway at the Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay is to be extended at a cost of US$65 million.

At its current length, the airport, which is a critical part of the country’s tourism infrastructure, is unable to accommodate some of the world’s largest aircraft.

However, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller told tourism stakeholders in Montego Bay on Friday that the runway will be extended by 450 feet and that preparatory work has already started.

Simpson Miller says the design for the proposed extension has been completed and the Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ), has begun acquiring the additional parcels of land that will be needed.

She says there are some minor details still to be worked out by the AAJ and the private operators of the airport, but adds that as soon as those discussions are completed the project should get started.
